WILSON FIKE’S WARRICK HOLDS INDIVIDUAL LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY OF PLAY IN NCHSAA 1A/2A/3A WOMEN’S GOLF
SOUTHERN PINES— Wilson Fike’s Mallory Warrick has a one-shot lead over the field after Monday’s opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1A/2A/3A women’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Warrick, who the only even par score of the day with a 71, has a one-stroke advantage over Kayla Sciupider of West Henderson. Sciupider, who finished tied for third in the individual standings in the 2008 championships and won it all last year, had a blistering 33 on the back nine and finished with a first-day total 72.
East Lincoln’s Mattie Toby is in third, two shots back. The championship layout is a par 71 and 5,618 yards.
Defending team champ West Henderson has a 10-shot advantage over Salisbury in the team standings, with Northern Guilford in third place, 17 shots off the pace.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 12 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the eighth year that a separate 1A/2A/3A championship has been held and the 30th year for state championship competition in the sport.
The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 on Tuesday morning. Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
