1A/2A Championship: West Davidson runs out to 28 shot lead on day 1, Clinton’s Wooten with 5-shot lead in individual
FOXFIRE VILLAGE, N.C. – Clinton’s Amy Wooten holds a five shot advantage on the rest of the field at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 1A/2A Women’s Golf State Championship at Foxfire Resort’s Grey Fox Course.
Wooten poured in five birdies to go along with two bogeys and a double bogey on her way to carding a 1-under par 71 on the 5,607 yard layout. After back-to-back bogeys on holes 11 and 12, Wooten strung together three birdies on the next three holes.
In the team competition, West Davidson holds a 28-shot advantage over Franklin Academy. West Davidson finished second in the event last year behind Croatan. Rachel Mast powered the West Davidson side with a 4-over par 76 on the day, good enough for second in the individual event.
3A Championship: Chapel Hill’s Kim leading by five, Rockingham County holds team lead after first day in 3A
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Chapel Hill’s Gina Kim, the defending 3A individual state champion, stormed out to a five-shot lead in day one of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 3A Women’s Golf State Championships at Longleaf Golf & Country Club's 5,546 yard, par 72 layout.
Kim, a junior at Chapel Hill, carded only a single bogey on the day as the third hole, a 153-yard par 3, was her lone blemish on the scorecard. She posted birdies on three par fours, the 1st, 2nd and 18th hole, as well as the 388 yard par 5 12th hole.
Rockingham County holds the team lead after day one, as the defending 3A team champions got solid rounds from Haley McCrossan and Walker Sullivan. McCrossan posted a 7-over par 79 and Sullivan carded an 8-over par 80 on the day. The team posted a 37-over, 253 total. Northern Guilford trails by eight shots at 45-over, 261, with Williams eight shots in back of the Nighthawks in third.
Weddington’s Jenny Zhang had the highlight of the tournament as she knocked in a hole-in-one on the 145-yard par 3 11th hole.
4A Championship: Pinecrest & Athens Drive's Chang lead after first day of NCHSAA 4A Women’s Golf State Championship
PINEHURST, N.C. – After a second place finish a year ago, Pinecrest holds a nine-shot lead after day one of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 4A Women’s Golf State Championship at Pinehurst No. 5. Last year’s individual champion, Jenny Chang of Athens Drive, leads the individual tournament, cruising to a 1-under par 71 on the on the 5,709 yard, par 72 layout.
Chang battled through an up and down round, with four birdies to go along with three bogeys. She birdied two par fours, the 315-yard 4th hole and the 350 yard 16th, as well as the par 5 17th hole and the par 3 6th hole. She leads by a single shot over Keri Kenkel of Charlotte Catholic who fired an even-par 72. Kenkel sits a shot in front of a group of five players at 1-over by two shots headed into the final round.
The team competition is also tight with the Pinecrest Patriots getting an excellent round from Mackenzie Battle who carded a 1-over par 73 on her way to a tie for 2nd place on the individual leaderboard. Elizabeth Nguyen added a 7-over 79 while teammate Jaclyn Kenzel rounded out the three-member team score with a 10-over 82.
Battle was steady all day, with 15 pars on the round. She birdied the par 5, 420-yard 17th for her only red marker of the round, with bogeys on the par 4 7th hole and the par 3 13th.
The defending 4A team champions, Cardinal Gibbons are poised just nine shots back of Pinecrest heading into day two. The Crusaders sit at 27-over par at 243 and were paced by Riley Smyth who fired a 6-over par 78. Hailey Freedman and Hannah Rose Bruxvoort were the other two scores on the team card with a 10-over par 82 and 11-over par 83, respectively.
Charlotte Catholic is lurking in third place at 32-over par as a team, 14 shots behind the leaders from Pinecrest.
