CHAPEL HILL— Jenna Robbins from Reagan High School and Keonte Cherry from West Mecklenburg High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Robbins, a senior on the Reagan volleyball team, led her team to two wins in three matches on the week, knocking off Forbush and Glenn while falling to Ardrey Kell. Robbins pushed the Raiders with 41 kills and a 46% Kill percentage. She also added 20 digs, with 56 serve receive balls, 4 blocks and 4 aces.
Cherry, a senior on the West Mecklenburg football team, led the Hawks to a 62-12 victory over Independence with his near-record setting defensive performance. Cherry had 4 interceptions in the game, just one shy of the state record of 5 in a game set in 1980 by Parkland’s Lamarr Landrum. Cherry returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns, pushing him to 4 interception returns for touchdown on the season.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in early May. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
