STUDENTS FROM PARKWOOD & EAST SURRY EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Amber Parker from Parkwood High School and Jefferson Boaz from East Surry High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators. 

Parker, a senior from the Parkwood wrestling team, won the 138-pound weight class at the inaugural NCHSAA Women’s Wrestling Invitational. She entered the tournament as the #2 seed, eventually besting the top seed, Elisa Cox from Butler 9-4 in the finals to secure her first place finish. Parker also is a successful softball player and a pivotal contributor to the 2017 State Championship team her sophomore season. She has already signed a letter of intent to continue her softball career at Western Carolina in the fall.

Boaz, a junior on the East Surry men’s basketball team, scored his 1,000thcareer point on Wednesday in a 69-54 victory over Mount Airy. He finished the game with 19 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, a pair of steals and a block. Then later in the week, Boaz had a career-high 35 points including seven threes to go with his 12 rebounds and pairs of assists, blocks and steals as the Cardinals knocked off Bishop McGuinness 61-55.  

Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
