STUDENTS FROM ATHENS DRIVE & GRANVILLE CENTRAL EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Khalia Morton from Granville Central High School and David Whalen from Athens Drive High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards. Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Morton, a junior on the Granville Central women’s basketball team, notched a pair of double-doubles while leading her team to a 2-0 record on the week. She began the week with a 15 point, 11 rebound effort in a win over Roxboro Community School. Then she followed that performance up with a 20 point, 15 rebound performance in a win against Warren County.

Whalen, a senior on the Athens Drive men’s swimming and diving team, finished first in the 100 yard backstroke event, touching in a time of 51.94 seconds. He finished second overall in the meet’s 50 yard freestyle event with a time of 22.35 and posted the second fastest split time as a starter for the 200 yard freestyle relay team that finished first in the meet with a combined time of 1:30.66. He helped lead the team to victory in their first meet of the season and is committed to LSU to continue his swimming career next year.

Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
