CHAPEL HILL— Jainaya Jones from Pamlico County High School and Jaylen Alston from Eastern Guilford High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Jones, a sophomore point guard has been clutch for the Lady Canes in the 1A women’s basketball playoffs. She posted big numbers in the sectional finals against East Columbus, scoring 22 points while shooting 6 of 10 from the field and 10 for 12 from the foul line. She also had 9 assists and 5 steals. She scored 18 points and had nine assists as the Lady Canes beat the Eastern #1 seed Plymouth and scored 17 points with 10 assists in the regional final win against Roxboro Community.
Alston, a junior on the Eastern Guilford men’s hoops team, has been a huge part of the Wildcats run to the 3A State Title game as he is averaging better than 21 points per game. In the Wildcats 52-34 win over Northern Guilford in the Eastern Regional Final, Alston set the pace with 22 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and shooting 8 of 12 from the floor in the game.
TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
