CHAPEL HILL— Natalie Tyner from E.A. Laney High School and Zonovin Knight from Southern Nash High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
Tyner, a junior on the Laney cross country team, took home the top spot in the 4A Cross Country State Championship meet, posting a time of 17:41.82. That time was 27 seconds better than the second-place finisher in the meet. Tyner did not lose a regular season race on the way to the first Individual Cross Country Championship on the Women’s side for Laney in school history.
Knight, a junior on the Firebirds football team, helped lift the team to a 10-1 season and Big East Conference Championship on Friday night with his four-touchdown performance. Knight piled up 252 yards on just seven carries in a 60-7 win over Franklinton. Knight received a scholarship offer from Duke after the game according to Southern Nash’s athletic director.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year in late April. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
